Paula Badosa defeated former two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in a third-set tiebreak to win the BNP Paribas Open, becoming the tournament’s first Spaniard to do so.
Azarenka, the former World No. 1, would have won her third BNP Paribas Open title, the most of any player. Instead, the Spaniard won her second WTA singles title of the season and her career.
The 3-hour, 4-minute match is the longest WTA singles final of the year. Badosa, who defeated four Top 20 players in a row en route to the final, when she overcame Azarenka to move to 2-0 in WTA singles finals.
